FHA wins highest scoring flight school at Hammerhead Round Up Aerobatic Contest in Borrego Springs, CA for the second consecutive year! IAC Chapter 36 San Diego Hammerheads hosted another great event with 38 pilots competing in all categories.

David Day took 1st overall in Primary flying the Huey Super D going 1-1-1 on his flights.

Gino Maneri in the FH Laser 230 took an impressive 3rd overall in a highly competitive Sportsman field going 3-2-1 on his flights. Gino also won the highest scoring first time sportsman award.

Alex Huey, local legend, and advanced category pilot took 2nd overall in Sportsman flying an impressive 5 figure free program twice in the Decathlon. He also takes home the highest scoring Decathlon award.

FH owner Eric Moore took 3rd overall in Unlimited as he adapts to the new FH Extra 330SC.

Theses combined efforts also won IAC Chapter 62 Southern Arizona the highest scoring chapter award.

Multiple vertical rolls in the SC. How do you stop a vertical roll exactly on heading? As Jim Bourke once said : “use the force” . Stoping rolls the left are more timing than anything else as the wing leads and blocks your vision. By the time you see your ref point it’s too late. Rolls to the right are easier to stop, I’m still working on that. Learn how with and @fhaerobatics

This figure sucks and is a challenge. Why does it suck? Well, that outside 5/8th loop up from the inverted down line is alot of high negative G from an entry speed of 180kts all while the ground is looming ever larger. It’s a challenge because that 3/4 roll x 1 3/4 roll opposite is challenging to stay coordinated, hit the points and not snap out or otherwise make an error. Here I can roll faster, I’m just trying to do it right before adding speed.

The Decathlon is a great primary aerobatic trainer because it requires the development of proper technique. It has significant adverse yaw and rolls slow enough that your mistakes are evident and you have time process and correct. This is much unlike the higher performance aircraft where things happen so quick you are behind the airplane. It’s harder to develop good technique when your mistakes are masked by higher roll rate / less adverse yaw. Here is suuuuper slow roll. Watch how the aircraft stays on heading as the nose transcribes a circle directly out in front. Let’s see how slow you can roll the super d! New mount for 2025 and beyond. Stoked to be the custodian of the first 330SC. When @brooks_mershon asked about my thoughts on what it takes to move up to unlimited, my flippant response was “nut-up, write a check and figure it out”. But in reality it’s more than that. There’s no short cuts in this sport and you gotta make your bones. The Laser got me here and now the Extra is the next tool. This airplane will always be “AJ’s old plane”. I better fly good.

Video is not sped up. Here @look_its_taylor_ demonstrates an accelerated spin in the super d. The accelerated spin can be massively disorienting due to the high rate of rotation. Even more so if inverted. The accelerated spin demo performed here shows us the importance of correct spin recovery technique. In the demo the nose down elevator is brought in before the recovery rudder, accelerating the spin. This is a great illustration of why the order of PARE is important and what can happen if we get it wrong. Following a great contest at Akrofest 24’ in Borrego Springs, CA the FH Pitts put in 8 hours of work over 2 days with 5 spin endorsements and 3 acro intro flights. Special guests were the pilots from IMSAR out of KPSK in Utah. They contracted FH Aerobatics to be their provider of spin training and recurrent upset prevention training. IAC 139 had a great showing at AkroFest 24 in Borrego Springs, CA. @pilotmakers instructors @evannss_23 took 3rd overall in the sportsman category in his second contest and @tayla_funes took a solid 4th overall in the primary category earning a podium finish in her 3rd flight. Foxtrot Hotel owner @ericmoore68 placed 4th overall in the unlimited category with a best of a 3rd place finish in the second flight. @intheclouds_chloe got some great pictures from practice yesterday. Getting the Laser through the unlimited known and my freestyle clean is very satisfying.

Let’s taco-bout it. The flat spin is an aggravated spin mode in which the airplane spins in a nearly flat or level pitch attitude. Recovery, if not executed properly is nearly impossible as the elevator is ineffective at such an attitude. In the demo shown here a normal upright spin to the left is initiated, followed by full aileron opposite of the spin. This out spin aileron flattens the spin and slightly raises the nose. Following a rotation or 2 we add full power and watch the nose rise and we are now spinning with nose nearly parallel to the horizon. The presence of power and out spin aileron combine to illustrate the flat spin. Recovery is a great example of why we go through PARE. Reducing power to idle turns off that loud fan that is holding the nose up, bringing the ailerons to neutral further reduces the flattening tendency, full opposite rudder followed by enough nose down elevator to break the stall and stop rotation. Out in Provo, UT with @lisadraperflies learning humpty bumps and hammer heads! FH can provide instruction in your aircraft; Pitts, Eagle, Skybolt, Extra, Decathlon, Yak and even your RV. We have the experience to make you a safer more proficient pilot as you learn aerobatics in your own aircraft.

Here is a spin from an accelerated stall. Notice how quickly it departs into a spin. I do this exercise and the cross controlled stall into spin entry to illustrate to students how the increase in load factor can affect how quickly we can depart into a spin. Now apply these lessons to the typical base to final stall spin scenario. Flying with me is often the first time students have taken an accelerated stall all the way. We go one step further and add rudder and let it turn into a spin. We do this exercise to emphasize that just like a stall, we can spin the airplane at anytime. We only need a stall and yaw to have a spin, the increase in load factor and resulting spin entry from a higher airspeed equals more inertia in the spin, therefore we reach the developed phase sooner. Flat spin entry and recovery in the Pitts. This demonstration shows why the order of PARE recovery matters. It also illustrates two inputs that flatten the spin. When a spin flattens out it raises the nose and makes the elevator ineffective, making recovery all but impossible….unless we close the throttle and center the ailerons. In this demo a normal spin is entered to the left and is followed by adding full right aileron. You can see the nose start to rise, this is followed by adding full power which really flattens the spin out as you can see the nose almost touch the horizon. Recovery is simple as we reduce power to idle, center the ailerons and proceed with application of full opposite rudder and nose down elevator. Notice it takes a few turns to spot spinning as we’ve added all that rotational inertia. Great weekend of flying. 6 CFI candidates from @simpliflyco earned their spin endorsements. 3 each on Saturday and Sunday braved the heat and early 445am start time to get it knocked out. Great job guys. I know you all learned a lot and had fun in the Pitts 🤙

Friend and pilot @citizendefenseusa came out for a long over due acro lesson today. Having too much fun in the Pitts. This airplane has logged 25 hours of acro and spin training this month alone. That’s a lot of smiles per hour.

Lucas and Jackson knocked their CFI spin endorsements out of the park today. I love sharing this airplane and making safer, more knowledgeable pilots.

The Pitts grin is a thing. Two spin endorsements this morning and all smiles as these students got some bonus acro at the end.

I learned to fly the Pitts from Bud in 8PB. I was a dumb 100hr pilot who had just bought an S1 and all I knew was that I was going to compete in aerobatics. 1000 hrs of aerobatics later and I get to share a hangar with Bud teaching acro in the S2C. A younger Eric would not believe it.

Since our Pitts S2C came online at the beginning of the month the response has been fantastic. From our aerobatic students going onto compete and win, to a number of Spin students, CFI spin, HP endorsements and intro to acro flights we are so stoked to introduce many of you to the world of aerobatics in the Pitts.

FH aerobatics had a great contest at the 2024 Hammer Head roundup in Borrego Springs. @christian_delrey taking first overall in primary, @manerigino taking 3rd overall in primary, @madscienceaero placing third in the 2nd sportsman flight, @the_huester placing 1st in the advanced category known flight and FH owner @ericmoore68 taking 3rd overall in the advanced category. These combined scores earned Foxtrot Hotel Aerobatics the highest scoring flight school award. Thank you to @bh777bound , Jen, David and @mckenna74h for being part of the fun! This was truly a great contest shared with many great people. Can’t wait to do it again.
